Peterson Carries Kansas Past a Dangerous CBU Squad
Kansas survived a significant second-half rally from California Baptist, 68-60, on the back of Darryn Peterson's game-high 28 points.
Darryn Peterson was the reason this game was never truly in doubt. His 28 points on 11-of-24 shooting, including 4-of-11 from three, gave Kansas a primary scorer who could generate offense when the offense around him dried up -- and it dried up considerably in the second half.
Tre White did the complementary work Peterson needed: 12 points, seven rebounds, and a perfect 6-of-6 from the free throw line, which mattered in a game where Kansas finished 12-of-14 at the stripe to CBU's 10-of-19.
The free throw gap was the decisive thread. California Baptist left eight points on the line at 52.6 percent shooting from the charity stripe, and those are exactly the points that would have made the final margin uncomfortable for Kansas. CBU outrebounded the Jayhawks 42-41 with a 12-10 edge on the offensive glass, and Dominique Daniels Jr. gave them a genuine star-level performance at 25 points and seven boards, but the Lancers could not convert close-range opportunities at a rate that would threaten a team that protected the line as efficiently as Kansas did.
