Kaufman-Renn Powers Purdue Past Scrappy Texas
Trey Kaufman-Renn's 22-point, 8-rebound performance inside gave Purdue enough cushion to survive Texas's second-half surge and escape the Sweet 16 with a 79-77 win.
Kaufman-Renn was the most efficient player on the floor, finishing 9-of-11 from the field with four offensive rebounds in 36 minutes. Texas had no answer for him in the paint, and his ability to generate second-chance opportunities kept Purdue ahead at halftime and within reach when the Longhorns came back in the second half.
Tramon Mark gave Texas every reasonable chance to win, scoring 29 points on 11-of-15 shooting with five threes, putting together one of the better individual performances of the tournament so far. But Mark's output was largely a one-man operation -- no other Texas player reached 20 points, and Dailyn Swain's five turnovers in 39 minutes gave Purdue clean possessions at critical moments.
Texas shot 44 percent from three and actually out-shot Purdue from the field overall, but the Longhorns went just 8-of-15 from the free throw line compared to Purdue's 15-of-20, a seven-point swing that was ultimately larger than the final margin. Purdue's four turnovers against Texas's seven kept the Boilermakers in control of their own fate even when the shooting wasn't there.
